Cable, Boston, November 22, 1883, writes to "Dear Sir," forwarding the programme of his projected Boston reading (not present) He sends a second letter on the same date to "Mr. Smith" expressing happiness with his success in Springfield. An unrelated envelope addressed to A.H. Dooley is present.

George Washington Cable, an American author and critic, was born in New Orleans and fought for the South in the Civil War. His first collection of tales of life in the south was Old creole days (1879). In 1884 he went on a reading tour with Mark Twain. He moved to Northampton, Mass., in 1885.
